Southern Counties was the first benched show we have been to, and it was quite different from what we expected. Dennis Bibby was judging dogs and bitches. Results from our area were 3rd PD Julian’s Zuberg Lyric. 1st JD Ward’s Belezra Jett. 1st SpYD Aldridge’s Belezra High Calibre of Edser. 2nd SpYD Hiscox’s Jaquenetta Bonneville. 1st PB & BPIB Hensley’s Zuberg Lottie ( Well done Dave and Denise). 4th PB Bickford’s Ponway Hylite von Psuedemore 5th PB Colton’s Fernspot Shuni. 2nd JB Bond’s Belezra Jamaica at Zeikayla. 4th SpYB Cooper’s Belezra Jenna. 2nd OB Hensley’s Zuberg Deenika. We found a good bookstall that had a copy of The Alsatian Dog by Francis N. Pickett, at a reasonable price, a book we have wanted ever since reading a review of it in an old magazine. He is quite outspoken about  ‘the heavily-bodied, low-to-ground types with short legs incapable of making a long stride,’ which had begun to make their mark in the show ring at the time. He states ‘One such dog advertised as a winner in Championship Shows and holder of a Reserve CC., when measured was found to have front legs only 9ins high from elbow to the ground, while the depth of brisket was 15ins’. There is also an interesting piece on shock absorption which begins, ‘It was only when the gait was studied with the aid of high-speed photography that some idea of the true function of the pasterns and what v. Stephanitz described as a “wart” became known.’

The Three Counties show where Gary Gray was judging brought back memories. Some of the German Shepherds reminded me of the ones I used to help out with and walk for a GSD breeder who lived near our farm, nearly forty years ago. Mind you I can’t talk, our young dog bears more than a passing resemblance to an early 1900s bronze statue of a running German Shepherd by the French sculptor Mene we purchased a while back.

We made the long journey to West Yorks GSD Club Champ. Show, what a super venue and friendly atmosphere. It was a five hour journey and the first person I met was Pam Meaton who lives about 30mins from us, well done to her and Joyce on Dotty gaining the res.BCC.  DCC & BOB was Ronnie and Ted’s Riot, handled by  Rob Davies, congratulations to them. Other results, dog judge Richard Brauch, 2nd SpYD Aldridge’s Belezra High Calibre of Edser. 6th SpYD Hiscox’s Jaquenetta Bonneville. 3rd PGD Davies & Wilkins Lindanvale Honda of Eyanica. This dog is doing consistently well for his proud owners Barbara and Norman being 4th PGD at BAGSDS and 4th PGD at GSDL of GB shows the weekend previous. 1st OD & DCC & BOB Green & Tolputt’s Videx Omar at Devat.  Bitch judge was Joan Hall. 6th JB Bond’s Belezra Jamaica at Zeikayla. 1st SpYB Meaton’s Moonwinds Foxi.  5th SpYB George, Bennett & Richards Romainville Raiki. 1st PGB & Res.BCC Meaton’s Dotty vom Bierstadter Hof.

At Border Union, judge Nikki Farley. 1st GB Davies’ Silverleigh Niamh. Her sire Nielsen du Normont is now living with Rob and Margaret. He did his show training in French, his working qualifications in German, and now he has to cope with English spoken in a Welsh accent, that is one bright dog. I am looking forward to making his acquaintance.

Sue Elliott rang to ask if Peter was interested in going to Germany with Bob to mate their homebred Mack v Aducht daughter with Bax v Luisenstrasse, as they were too busy at the kennels for her to go with him. He was leaving early the next morning, so Peter went with him. They did the mating in the evening and then went to a Landesgruppen-Zuchtschau in Baden on the Sunday. Judges were Erich Orschler, Leonhard Schweikert and Johann Mayer. 1st in the Junghundklasse was a dog we both like Orbit v Huhnegrab. 1st Jugendklasse Ronaldo v d Noriswand. 1st Gebrauchshundeklasse was another on our shopping wish list, Quirin v Hochmoor. In bitches1st Junghundklasse Oduscha vom Team Fiemereck. 1st Jugendklasse Fendi von Wilhendorf. 1st Gebrauchshundeklasse Qualli v d Flur, Bob and Peter took a liking to another Wallace aus Agrigento daughter in this class.

Joyce told me the Moonwinds ‘F’ litter, Cherry v Bergmannshof x Salome Bierstadter Hof, as well as doing well here has also done well in Ireland. At the Irish Sieger Show 2nd Youth Female Moonwinds Fenzi. 3rd YF Moonwinds Finesse. 2nd Young Female Moonwinds Foxi. At the NIGSDC 1st JB Moonwinds Foxi. 2nd JB Moonwinds Finnesse 3rd JB Moonwinds Fenza. Moonwinds Figi has only been lightly shown but has also done well. Quite an achievement.

We did not go to the GSDC of Devon open show, judge Kathy George. The only results I have are BD Aldridge’s Belezra High Calibre of Edser. BB & BOB Meaton’s Moonwinds Foxi, (well done Pam and Joyce).

Worthy Farm that hosts the Glastonbury Festival is in the village of Pilton, where we live. The perimeter fence is about fifty yards from our boundary, so we hear all the live music from the Pyramid stage. I turn into Father Jack in the channel four sitcom Father Ted for its duration, as we get fenced in the length of our road and need passes to get in and out. I went to the first ones, but it has become too commercialised now, when the Organisers of it make 15 million in advance ticket sales it is not likely to change. While crowds of people were trying to get into the village we were trying to get out to attend the Heads of the Valley GSDC Open Show. Congratulations to proud owners Richard and Lindsey Morgan on their Belezra Kelci going BOB. The judge for dogs and bitches was Dannie O’Niell. Other results 2nd MPD Green’s Grunbruders Brutusceaser. 1st JD Keen’s Clokellys Titian. 2nd Ward’s Belezra Jett. 3rd Green’s Jutones Ghorbie at Grunbruders. 1st SpYD Hiscox’s Jaquenetta Bonneville. 2nd PGD Davies & Wilkins Lindanvale Hondo at Eyanica. 3rd PGD Butler & Pearson’s Macrompian Fedz at Voneche. 1st OD & BD Aldridge’s Belezra High Calibre of Edser. 2nd OD Cullen’s Zenno vom Huhnegrab. 3rd OD Swift’s Copybush Declan. 2nd MPB Green’s Grunbruders Bellanne 1st PB Lewis’ Morrow Akuna. 2nd PB Green’s Grunbruders Bonnie. 1st JB & BB& BOB Morgan’s Belezra Kelci. 2nd  JB Elliott’s Toilers Vera. 3rd JB Swift’s Caemaen Luc. 4th Keen’s Clokellys Laurenna. 1st SpYB Cooper’s Belezra Jenna. 2nd SpYB Roberts’ Mortoff Roma of Komodo. 3rd SpYB Shepherd’s Blitzenheim Edana. 1st PGB Shepherd & Stout’s Lindmark Maltilda. 2nd PGB Houle’s Belezra Geena of Auriga. 3rd PGB Davies & Wilkins’ Eyanica Anjie. 4th PGB Elliott’s Toilers Sky. 1st LB Ward’s Belezra Deminka Gold. 2nd LB Roe’s Porzella Doll at Shiroe. 4th PGB Keen’s Clokellys Cristina. 1st OB Davies Mortoff Libby. 2nd OB Summers’ Romainville Carli. 1st Veteran Evans Lindanvale Image at Anntref.

We went to the BGSDTC Champ Show. Our handler could not make it so he sent a sub, whose car broke down at Birmingham, so grateful thanks to Barbara Davies for stepping in and handling Sparky. Judge for dogs was Dr Luis Soldevilla. 3rd PGD Aldridge’s Belezra High Calibre of Edser. 4th PGD Davies & Wilkins Lindanvale Hondo at Eyanica. 5th LD Jacobson & Hutchinson’s Lindmark Lexus at Mascani. 6th OD Green & Tolputt’s Videx Omar at Devat. Bitch judge was Billy Thomas. 1st JB Meaton’s Moonwinds Foxi. 4th JB Bonds’ Belezra Jamaica at Zeikayla. 1st SpYB Hall’s Vonderoak Roma. 4th PGB Davies & Wilkins Eyanica Anjie, handled by Barbara herself. 3rd OB Meaton’s Dotty vom Bierstadter Hof.

It will soon be the Sieger Show, this year’s coach trip is Rose and Harry’s swan song, so we will have to make it one to remember, they are such a lovely warm-hearted couple.
