Being interested in every aspect of the GSD I always read Tracking Lines by Wendy Beasley in Dog World to see if any GSDs get a mention. In the October 14th edition she says at the KC Working Trial Championships there are two GSDs working in the TD stake. Chris Gregory’s WT Ch Vomsanbar Eros, and Doug Shearer’s Norshep Digga, which is good. What is not good is the mention of a litter bred by Rod Roberts, he has crossed a GSD and a Collie. Two of the resulting litter are competing at the KC Championships one in TD the other in PD, which prompts Wendy to comment, “a purpose bred cross to produce the best of both Collie and GSD and, judging by Brad and his brother Bart………the breeding has definitely paid off.”
German Shepherds are all-rounders, but some excel in a certain area like tracking, sheepherding, protection and so on. When the breed had been developed for several years the breeders knew which sires excelled in which discipline, and if it was fixed in them through their breeding lines, then it would depend for what purpose the litter was being bred, which dog was used. With several working imports coming into the Country, and some breeders specializing in breeding dogs with very good working abilities for competition and the Forces, there must be suitable GSDs he could have used without resorting to out-crossing to a Collie.
Apparently some exhibitors have been complaining about a judge commenting in their critiques in the dog papers, that their dogs were, ‘not my type’. As the KC puts it in their Guide To Judges-annex D, “A few phrases to avoid are ‘Not my type’, you are supposed to be judging to the KC Breed Standard, not ‘your ‘ type.”
We purchased Pepsi last year, but she did not have a pet passport, so we left her in Germany rather than bring her through quarantine. As she has been used to living in a kennel, we thought (and Dennis tried to convince us) we should prepare some outside quarters for her. Peter purchased a garden shed and converted it by panelling the inside, dividing it in two, and putting stable doors on each section. The first night she was put in it she was not happy. She paced about so much we worried she would stress herself, so Peter brought her indoors with the other dogs, where she settled down quite happily all night. So when her puppies were due we whelped her in a sectioned off part of the kitchen like our homebred bitches. Which makes me think the dog is still a pack animal at heart. When we imported our first German bitch in 1993 there was no alternative to quarantine, so she had to have her puppies there. Being able to bring the bitch straight in and having the puppies at home is better for all concerned.
