I would like to thank Heather and David for putting me up (or should that be putting up with me), when I was in Scotland to judge their club show. And thank you to fellow house guest Jim McMillan for his coffee making skills. David and Heather were moving house the following week, so I hope all went well. This could be a first, I returned from Scotland with more cash than I took with me. My steward Irene was trying to get hold of a copy of my book without success, so she gave me the money for me to send her a signed one. I also would like to thank everyone who contributed to an entry of 69 dogs. I have judged German Shepherds at six general open shows since August 2004, but this was my first breed open show and my first time giving verbal critiques. I thank the exhibitors and handlers for making it such an enjoyable experience. Good isn’t it, I have to go all the way to Scotland to find out South West news. Heather, David and Jim could tell me that one of their Idol v Holtkamper Hof x Conbhairean Happy litter is with Terry Kessel in Devon. I remember Terry showing several very good Voneche males a few years ago, but has not been around the show scene for a while. Heather had a text on her phone to say Carol Keen’s bitch Zeta has gained her Kkl, and their friend in Germany, Ingrid, will be training Michelle and Jane’s Zumander Atia towards her SchH1 & Kkl.

Our Larus daughter Pepsi has had nine puppies by Xeno v Elzmundungsraum a Zamp son out of an Enzo v Buchhorn Daughter. We met Zamp and his owner early in the morning for a mating, but because Pepsi would not toilet he intimated Zamp would not mate her. She flirted with him and Zamp got on her back. The owner pulled him off and said “no pee-pee”. Time was getting on and the chap had to go to work. Peter asked (using hand signals as the chap did not speak English) if we could try again later. He agreed 6 p.m. at the same place. So we stayed all day at the same place in the van until he came back in the evening and took us to his kennels. When we left England we had two more VA dogs as back up as we were warned Zamp probably would not perform, but when we arrived in Germany we learnt that both of them had used up their quota of studs and could not be used for two months. We had been told about a very good Zamp son beforehand, which was Xeno. When in the evening Pepsi did ‘pee-pee’ and Zamp was not interested, after seeing Xeno who was father typical we used him. I have heard of several people going over to Germany with their bitches and not getting a mating with their first choice dog. The breeders in this Country have to put in so much more effort than a lot of other Countries to breed with the top German dogs, and get so many knock backs trying, but we will keep persevering.

Jo Lewis’s Ji (Morrow Akuna at Maewyns) a Pako v Pleystrang daughter is nursing a litter of five to Qai v Estherlager.

I was flying back from Scotland on the day of the GSDL Open Show, but Dennis and Wayne took Zumander Bacchus to the show as they had a puppy parade and had his photo taken by Urma. I watched a programme on Channel 4 entitled Animal Addicts. One of the people featured was Helen Hein and her German Shepherd dogs. Her affix is Amberwell. A bitch we bought about twenty years ago had a lot of her breeding in it, she used to use German dogs like Joll v Bemholt, Falk v Haus Edelflor and Ilk v Eschbacher Klippen. She began to breed for good hips and sound character. In the early 1990’s she had 140 dogs living in the house and kennel. She was visited by the RSPCA and prosecuted by them and banned from keeping dogs for seven years and then allowed to keep fifteen. In the programme she revealed she has started breeding again and had a litter of puppies. She said she needed the money from the sale of the puppies to pay some bills. It is a shame that she started out breeding for the improvement of the breed and ended up breeding for the money.
