Margaret and Rob Davies had a good weekend in Ireland with Silverleigh Niamh, she became young Siegerin at the GSA of Ireland Sieger Show on the Saturday and gained 2nd GB on the Sunday at Ulster. Ronnie Green and Ted Tolputt also did well with Videx Omar at Devat. He was Res. Sieger on the Saturday and was 1st OD & Green Star & BOB on the Sunday. Ivor Jacobson & Shirley Hutchinson’s Lindmark Lexus at Mascani gained 1st LD & Res. Green Star. Congratulations to all.
After passing the B/C exam, I thought I needed some stewarding experience. On Easter Monday I second stewarded in the BIS ring for a local dog club, from 8.30 a.m. until 6.30 p.m., for 17 breeds (50 classes), 2 groups and BIS. I quite enjoyed it, it reminded me of the days when I was a catering manager at a leisure complex, starting at nine and often finishing after midnight, expected to keep a smile on your face throughout, but all working together and keeping each other’s spirits up, (but minus the swigs of cooking sherry). The other steward was full of useful tips like the first thing you do is place the poo bucket in the farthest corner of the ring. There were two classes for GSDs scheduled, junior with no entries and open with five entries two of which were absent.1st O&BOB was Gray’s Slatehouse Mannus, who also won the Pastoral Group, 2nd O Turner’s Woodsford Vigilante at Jodonje, 3rd O Jones’ Arncourt Deputy. The secretary of the Club told me they have been granted premier status for 2006 so all BOB’s qualify for Crufts. Which is a little disconcerting as the majority of the sixty breeds scheduled at this club are judged by all-rounders. In the judges/steward’s envelope was a piece of paper headed Guidelines for dealing with cases of suspected attraction of exhibits from outside the ring during judging, which was to be dealt with severely. They allow outside attraction in other Countries. I laughed when I read about Margaret Wildman’s judging exploits in foreign places, in one of the dog papers. She noticed this dog showing ‘up on his toes totally alert’ she moved in front of his eyeline to see what attracted him and found it was a live mouse being dangled by its tail. The dog at that moment took off as did several others, the attractor dropped the mouse, the dogs dragged their handlers through the crowd after it. When the commotion calmed down and the dogs were back in the ring, she noticed that the attractor was dangling another mouse. Apparently he always carried a spare as he invariably lost the first one.
I had a telephone call from Sue Elliott to let me know that a sable dog she bred Toilers Timo at Sarsway (Esko v Danishen-Hof x Pamela v Haus Dexel, a Timo daughter.), now owned and trained by Sally Bergh Roose, has qualified Cdex Udopen at twenty months old, gaining first place in three trials and second in the fourth His hip score is total 4. Sue has a litter due sired by a litter brother of Timo’s. Sally is delighted with him, and she e-mailed me to say he now has Wdopen. I hope she has more luck with this one; she took on a Jaquenetta Jinnistan son Logan that had been returned to his breeder. She had him hip scored total 6 and began working him she qualified him Cdex Udopen but had to retire him when a back injury, which must have happened when he was with his previous owners, flared up again. It is good to know that there are trainers of Sally’s calibre, (she has co-written with Stella Smyth several books on dog training), working with GSDs from show lines with success and not turning to other breeds.
Thanks to Denise Hensley for the Exonian show results where Linda Browning-Jones was the judge. Results from Langstone & District where H.O.V. GSDC sponsored the classes, judge Geoff Barlow, were 1st GD Davies & Wilkins Lindanvale Hondo at Eyanica. 2nd GD Hiscox’s Jaquenetta Bonneville. 3rd GD Gander’s Velvet Dream Knight. 1st PGD&BD Crouch’s Lindellas La Bada at Chalita. 1st GB Davies’ Silverleigh Niamh. 2nd GB Robert’s Mortoff Roma of Komodo. OB&BB&BOB Davies’ Mortoff Libby. 2nd OB Summers’ Romainville Carli. 3rd OB Davies’ Silverleigh Connie. The BOB Mortoff Libby was handled by Mike Davies’ daughter Jasmyn who did so well for one so young that Mike may have to move aside. And the 2nd OB Romainville Carli was handled by Dean Summers’ daughter Julieanne. It was amusing to see the anxious fathers hovering outside the ring, and hampering the performances of their daughters by their ineffectual attempts at attracting their dogs.
I received an e-mail from Jo Lewis to let me know her Morrow Akuna, a Pako v Pleystrang daughter, was BPB in both shows at Kent, and Ronnie and Ted’s Videx Omar at Devat was BD at one show and BOB at the other. I have to declare an interest in this puppy as she is a granddaughter of Jaquenetta Jinnistan at Conquell. Her breeder is Stella Smyth, who took the B/C judges exam in Essex at the same time as myself and also passed.
It is odd how traits appear further down a generation. Our imported German bitch often slept on her back. I have lived alongside dogs virtually all my life and she was the only one to do this until now, her great grandson often sleeps on his back. I thought it odd to sleep with their vulnerable parts on show, but Capt. Von Stephanitz in his book The German Shepherd Dog mentions this position, ‘Our dogs know very well indeed not only how to express despondency, but equally well that “on the top of the world” feeling. In such a mood of ease and comfort the most favourite position is lying full-length on the back, feet pressed to the body, fore-quarters bent, the head slightly lifted and turned sideways.’ Page 274 Fig. 252 shows a picture of a dog ‘At ease’.
Overheard asides.
‘He has thirty years experience.’ ‘Is that really thirty years of experience, or one year of experience repeated twenty nine times?’
‘Of course you like the winner he’s your type, he looks like the dogs that were winning ten years ago.’ ‘So when did they change the standard.
