      Well done to Jaquenetta Bonneville (Sparky) on being surveyed Class One by Percy Elliott at Midland Counties.

      Sparky was measured as 65cms at the wither making him top-size. The weekend before at a show the judge described him as medium size. Such is the size of some of the dogs in the ring today, that a dog of standard size 65cms is seen as medium size in comparison. The judges training video refers to 60cms as medium size, 62.5cms as over medium size and 65cms as large. If some judges are visualizing 65cms as medium size then it is no wonder we have a problem with size in the breed. Also the length of the head being approximately 40% of the height at the wither, to keep the proportions in balance it would follow that the taller the dog the larger the head. So the result would be oversize dogs with larger heads, which would be going away from the Shepherd dog envisaged by von Stephanitz and deleterious to the true working ability of the breed; it is good that the Germans are addressing the situation.
