Barbara Green ‘s foundation bitch came from the Picardy Kennels of Lt.Col. Baldwin in 1928 and was shown at the first Bath Champ Show. Barbara’s daughter Jill joined her mother in the Monksley Kennels and then granddaughter Ann, who trains with us at the Heads of the Valley Club. She handled the BOB winner at Bristol.
There is another star on the rise in Wales, Silverleigh Niamh. She appeared on the HTV news with, as she is now known at Club ‘not The Margaret Davies’. Margaret told me that the South Wales Police Authority’s new Lady Chief Constable is concerned about the Police Dogs’ welfare and the way they are trained. She is spending twenty seven thousand pounds on a survey of injuries sustained by Gsds on training programmes. HTV contacted Margaret for her opinion and asked her if she had a dog they could see working. Rob has been training Niamh at the Heads of the Valley Club on Sunday mornings when they hold the working sessions, so Margaret took her with her to the interview.
The other morning Peter was walking Sparky in the fields off the lead when he began to chase a bird. Peter was following directly behind him, he was about to call him back when, as Peter so succinctly put it, ‘the dog turned into a motorbike’, that moment when the German Shepherd is gaiting at speed and all four feet follow the same line to allow him greater cornering ability, it is just breathtaking to watch and you forget about calling him back as you marvel at the ingenuity of Nature in creating such a well balanced animal as the Gsd.
The next show in our area is The South West Working & Pastoral Breeds Assoc. at Hand Equestrian Centre, Clevedon, on 1st May. The judge is Tina Jermey, there are nine classes and the Gsds have an outside ring. Schedules from Mr G Argyle 01626 362279 closing date is Saturday 10th April.
