We now have our Pakros x Pepsi (Larus daughter) litter of one male, (I am relieved I did not know this was an only one at the time. We have had four singleton litters before this one, none born alive without a caesarean.) Pepsi was in the whelping box a couple of days before her due date, she was having contractions, but they were not very strong. She kept licking under her tail; I looked and could see two tiny feet sticking out of her vulva. I tried to pull the puppy out in time with her contractions, but they were too weak and the birthing canal was too narrow, then the contractions stopped altogether. We rang the vet who suggested we walk her around to kick start her contractions again, if it did not, to ring them in about ten minutes and take her in to them. We decided to take Pepsi in to the vet as the puppy’s feet were still sticking out and nothing was happening. Peter was going to take Pepsi on his own. Then we decided I should go with them in case she had to have a caesarean so I could stay with her. That meant all the dogs had to go as well. Peter put the dogs in the van, except Reuben who came back into the house to wait for me, as he has to make sure I am going with him before he will get in the van. I heard Peter call out ‘there’s a puppy in the van!’ I grabbed a towel and rushed out to find a puppy dangling from Pepsi’s back end. She was twirling round in the cage trying to get at it, as the placenta was still stuck inside and she would not lie down, she could not reach the puppy. I was sure it would be dead after all this time. I grabbed it with the towel, broke the cord, and it began struggling quite strongly. I took him into the house, gave him a good towelling and put him in the whelping box. Pepsi followed, we left him with her for a while and then transferred him to a box with a hot water bottle and blanket in it, in a corner of the whelping box so she could still see him. We waited for the next puppy as we thought we could still feel something inside her. After three hours with no contractions Peter took Pepsi in to the vet. She did not think there was any more puppies in Pepsi and gave her the injection to expel the retained placenta. The vet commented that the birthing channel was narrow and she was surprised he managed to come out through it. Luckily he was early so quite small, he came out backwards so his hind legs were out of the bag but his head must have been still in it inside; the downward push as Pepsi jumped up into the van must have expelled him. Peter said he shot out like a bullet.

I went with Wayne to take Hilla to Germany, it was getting late in the evening and we were trying to find somewhere to stay for the night without much success. The days are long gone when I thought sleeping in the car was an adventure. It occurred to me that it would be useful for those that travel in Europe, to swap information on places they have stayed that they can recommend. We have started a web page on our site and would be grateful if people would contribute.

Shows in the area Plymouth & District on Saturday 10th February 2007 at Exeter, judge Jean Hiscox. There are eight classes and the GSDs are judged in an outside ring.
